3.2 Contemporary Fairy Tale Script

3.2 Contemporary Fairy Tale Script

The large glistening sun resembled my mood that morning; it was the day I was to get fostered out of Jerry-hill Orphanage. It had been 8 years and 9 months I had been living in that monstrous place and that was the day I had been waiting for, every second of every day for 8 years and 9 months it was October 10th and that was the day, I couldn’t believe it! I remember several feelings swimming around in my tummy, there was; excitement, nerves, a little sadness but definitely the biggest feeling of relief! Now sitting here in this rat infested basement a year later, wearing 2 week old dirty rags, my skin covered in bruises and scars I don’t understand why I was quick to get out of jerry-hill.
Let me take you back to when I had been living with the Knights’s for over a month, the first month was everything I had ever dreamed of, the family were so welcoming and kind, they treated me like their own daughter, Kerry and Cherry introduced me to all their friends and Liz was just the mother I had ever dreamed of. Kevin, Liz’s husband, had been working in Germany for the first month I moved in so I hadn’t met him yet. It was the Friday he was coming home and Liz had cooked us a Sunday roast dinner for Kevin’s arrival. I remember getting the feelings swimming around in my tummy again as I was so nervous to meet him, I put on my best dress that Liz had bought me when we went to the mall the week before and I stood in the hallway waiting for him to step through the door. He arrived and chucked his bag at me,
“this must be the slave you bought Liz, how is she getting on?”
“Kevin! She is not a slave , she is out new daughter introduce yourself nicely!”
Kevin just glared at me and stomped up the stairs. That night he was quiet the whole dinner and there was an uncomfortable aura in the house. When I finished my dinner I went upstairs and got into bed and listened to Kevin and Liz arguing in the room below me, it sounded violent so I decided to block the sound out and I turned over to go to sleep. Suddenly my bedroom door swung open and Kevin grabbed me out of bed and chucked me on the floor, he said
“Now slave! You are going to everything I tell you , the fun is over for you little girl, it is time to play Cinderella, do you hear me?!”
He shouted and shook me until I answered to him, he left me on the floor and kicked me in the ribs on his way out. That night I cried and cried until there were no more tears left to cry and what I didn’t know, that wasn’t the worst of it. From that moment on Cherry and Kerry didn’t speak to me or include me in their games anymore, Liz looked at me with guilt and didn’t take me shopping or cook me nice food. I had to eat in my room by myself and had my TV taken away from me, my clothes weren’t washed and I only got to use the bath water after everyone else had been in it. Kevin treated me like a slave, beating me if I didn’t do something up to his standards, like he said I was playing Cinderella now just waiting for my fairy Godmother.
So now it is a year later and like I said I am sitting in this rat infested basement, in so much pain from my bumps and bruises, scrubbing the floor rid of rat poop and poison. I hear the doorbell rang, which was strange because I am the only one home as Cherry and Kerry had gone to school and Kevin and Liz had gone to work. They always told me never to answer the door unless they were home so I chose to ignore it. The doorbell rang again and I heard someone shout my name, I have no idea who it could have been, no one ever visited me. I decided to go and answer it. I opened the door with the sun blinding my eyes as I had been in darkness for so long, I couldn’t figure out who it was beyond the glare , “Angelina?” a soft calm voice said , I recognised the voice but from where I wondered, I rubbed my eyes to try and focus , “Angelina are you ok? It’s Sam , remember me?” , I leapt into his arms when I finally could see his glossy curly blonde lock and his bright blue kind eyes, it was Sam my care worker who was meant to visit me once and month and he never turned up Liz used to tell me. I made Sam and cup of tea and explained to him what had been going on, he said that he came to visit me every month but Liz always said I was out playing with Cherry and Kerry and she said I was fine and happy. Sam could tell I was not well and there were tears in his eyes when I told him what Kevin used to do. He told me that I was safe now and was going to be fostered by him and his family as he figured out that something was not right when he saw the guilt on Liz’s face everytime she answered the door.
“Angelina you should of took the phone and called the police when you first got hurt by Kevin , you have to speak out for help when you are in trouble , don’t hold in your worrys and feelings as no one deserves the pain you have been through!”
“I was to scared to call the police in-case Kevin found out , he would of killed me for that!”
“The police deal with people like Kevin very well Angelina , he would have been locked up and never been allowed to get out or near you ever again. I have rang the police and they will be collecting him from his office.”
I packed up my belongings and left with Sam , I was so happy to turn my back on that evil family. My fairy godfather had saved me and finally the Cinderella story had ended happily ever after.
The End.

Evaluation for Adapted News Report and fairy tale assignment

For the adapted news report we had to target children ages 6-11 year olds about the raise in the age that children have to stay in education until.

The two key facts that I found were important to include in my news report were; the options of qualifications you can study at 16 years old and to overstress the fact that the new law is that you have to stay in education until you are 18.

For this assignment I found it very difficult to use the appropriate language for this age group, to make this easier for my-self I researched how Newsbeat on CBBC present the news as they have a similar age group to the one I have to target for this assignment. I also found it difficult to fit in all the key information within the space of time allocated, I achieved this by breaking down the key information and repositioning my script.

The things I would like to improve are is the language in my script as I feel that it isn’t catchy enough for a news broadcast.

Fairy Tale assignment

When asked to write a conventional fairy tale assignment, I started to research classical fairytales as I wasn't very clued up on the actual fairytales. I started to think what modern day issues could have some relation to fairytales, I found Cinderella an easy fairy tale to base my script on as it has the common situation of family abuse in it. So i decided to represent Angelina's family as the cindrella family and to have the iconic fairy godmother who comes to save cinderella.

What I found hard about writing this fairy tale was to make sure i stick to the original fairy tale script as I seemed to go off track and my story started to have no resemblence of a fairytale. My friends in my class helped with my story line and after having some help i found my assignment was alot easier to write.

Next time i will spend more time on planning the assignment.

2.1 Evaluation

This is my evaluation of my 2.1 Radio advert for Metro Radio

When I got asked to write a radio advert to promote Gateshead College, the first thing that I researched was the different types of courses that Gateshead College offer and what is the unique selling point of the college. I researched this on the Gateshead College website first where I found the numerous of courses that they had to offer and then I found there unique selling point which is :

Gateshead College is strong , creative and reliable .’

I made sure I added this in my advert as it was key to promoting the college. I decided for the actors in the advert to have Geordie accents as the advert will be broadcasted on metro radio which is the number one radio in the north east and they base the radio on having a great local relationship , so therefore having the actors with a Geordie accent follows the style of the radio. When I finished my first draft one of my peers in my class read through it, the feedback I got was that I didn’t need to change the layout or the style and that it was good for my final draft.

My radio advert script follows the conventional layout of a radio script, it follows this style by the actor’s names in capitals and underlined and I also used phonetic spelling so the script is easy to read and broadcast. I based my layout on a Metro Radio advert script.

I think that my final radio advert was very successful as I ticked all the boxes for the assignment. I found that keeping the advert to 30 seconds was the hardest part as I had to fit in all the key information. After writing it out a few times I found i had the right information in and all the key parts to make a good radio advert.

What I learnt from this assignment was that radio adverts are only broadcasted for a small amount of time and that to fit in all the information is difficult. Next time I would like my advert to have more humour as I felt like I hadn’t achieved that.

3.2 Adapted News Report draft

We had to adapt a news report for children ages 6-11 years old. This is my first draft.

Hey guys have you ever wondered what you will be doing when you are 17 or 18? Well let me tell you !

There is a new rule in England that means that you have to be in education until you are 18 years old. The important people who are in-charge of the UK, think that this will be a great idea, as if you stay in education until you are 18 you will have a better chance of getting that dream job that you have always wished for, if it is being a pop star or an astronaut!

When you reach the age of 16 there are so many options for you , you can study one subject that really interests you , this is a diploma , you can do academic subjects which are called A levels, if you know what job you want to do you can learn about it more with a vocational qualification  and there are a lot more options for you to choose. You can find more information on our website!

2.2 NEWS EVALUATION

Evaluation

The process I went through to create my radio news broadcast was to begin with , I researched the most current news on websites such as : www.bbc.co.uk/news and www.theguardian.co.uk . On these websites I picked out the most current news and to me what I thought was the most important. I picked an even amount of sport, business , political , culture and celebrity news so that my news broadcast had a wide range of variety which will suit my target audience of 16-25. The language within the script isn’t too technical so the younger ages of the listeners can relate to these articles.
When I was constructing my first draft I based the layout on an example I had from Radio 1 Newsbeat script, this example is a conventional news script which most news broadcasters follow. On the script I noticed that they count how many seconds each news broadcast is and where you had to write down the duration. To make sure that my news script reflects my target audience I kept the news broadcasts relatively short, as younger listeners don’t normally like listening to too much talking on the radio.  When I thought I had finished my first draft, someone in my class looked over it and gave me some feedback. This is where I realised that I hadn’t written enough script for the duration to be near five minutes, I also hadn’t included any jingles or music beds which was rather important to keep my target audience interested in the news as music in the background keeps listeners focused to what news is being broadcasted, I also I hadn’t included audio notes. In order to improve my radio news script I researched how to include audio notes and music beds within my script, I found another example of a newsbeat broadcast script and followed the same layout. I found a few more news stories from my news research and added in these stories to extend my script.
To summarise my overall learning from this assignment I was surprised how simple a radio news script is, what I found difficult was making sure my news broadcast related to the right target audience. This is where I found out that adding in a music bed helped to keep the audience’s attention and also keeping the news broadcasts short but informative. What I should have done better is researched more radio news scripts as this would of helped me get the best news script to follow and therefore I wouldn’t of had to make so many changes to my first draft. From this assignment I have learnt that I should do a lot more research to improve my final draft.
