2.1 Evaluation

This is my evaluation of my 2.1 Radio advert for Metro Radio

When I got asked to write a radio advert to promote Gateshead College, the first thing that I researched was the different types of courses that Gateshead College offer and what is the unique selling point of the college. I researched this on the Gateshead College website first where I found the numerous of courses that they had to offer and then I found there unique selling point which is :

Gateshead College is strong , creative and reliable .’

I made sure I added this in my advert as it was key to promoting the college. I decided for the actors in the advert to have Geordie accents as the advert will be broadcasted on metro radio which is the number one radio in the north east and they base the radio on having a great local relationship , so therefore having the actors with a Geordie accent follows the style of the radio. When I finished my first draft one of my peers in my class read through it, the feedback I got was that I didn’t need to change the layout or the style and that it was good for my final draft.

My radio advert script follows the conventional layout of a radio script, it follows this style by the actor’s names in capitals and underlined and I also used phonetic spelling so the script is easy to read and broadcast. I based my layout on a Metro Radio advert script.

I think that my final radio advert was very successful as I ticked all the boxes for the assignment. I found that keeping the advert to 30 seconds was the hardest part as I had to fit in all the key information. After writing it out a few times I found i had the right information in and all the key parts to make a good radio advert.

What I learnt from this assignment was that radio adverts are only broadcasted for a small amount of time and that to fit in all the information is difficult. Next time I would like my advert to have more humour as I felt like I hadn’t achieved that.

3.2 Adapted News Report draft

We had to adapt a news report for children ages 6-11 years old. This is my first draft.

Hey guys have you ever wondered what you will be doing when you are 17 or 18? Well let me tell you !

There is a new rule in England that means that you have to be in education until you are 18 years old. The important people who are in-charge of the UK, think that this will be a great idea, as if you stay in education until you are 18 you will have a better chance of getting that dream job that you have always wished for, if it is being a pop star or an astronaut!

When you reach the age of 16 there are so many options for you , you can study one subject that really interests you , this is a diploma , you can do academic subjects which are called A levels, if you know what job you want to do you can learn about it more with a vocational qualification  and there are a lot more options for you to choose. You can find more information on our website!

2.2 NEWS EVALUATION

Evaluation

The process I went through to create my radio news broadcast was to begin with , I researched the most current news on websites such as : www.bbc.co.uk/news and www.theguardian.co.uk . On these websites I picked out the most current news and to me what I thought was the most important. I picked an even amount of sport, business , political , culture and celebrity news so that my news broadcast had a wide range of variety which will suit my target audience of 16-25. The language within the script isn’t too technical so the younger ages of the listeners can relate to these articles.
When I was constructing my first draft I based the layout on an example I had from Radio 1 Newsbeat script, this example is a conventional news script which most news broadcasters follow. On the script I noticed that they count how many seconds each news broadcast is and where you had to write down the duration. To make sure that my news script reflects my target audience I kept the news broadcasts relatively short, as younger listeners don’t normally like listening to too much talking on the radio.  When I thought I had finished my first draft, someone in my class looked over it and gave me some feedback. This is where I realised that I hadn’t written enough script for the duration to be near five minutes, I also hadn’t included any jingles or music beds which was rather important to keep my target audience interested in the news as music in the background keeps listeners focused to what news is being broadcasted, I also I hadn’t included audio notes. In order to improve my radio news script I researched how to include audio notes and music beds within my script, I found another example of a newsbeat broadcast script and followed the same layout. I found a few more news stories from my news research and added in these stories to extend my script.
To summarise my overall learning from this assignment I was surprised how simple a radio news script is, what I found difficult was making sure my news broadcast related to the right target audience. This is where I found out that adding in a music bed helped to keep the audience’s attention and also keeping the news broadcasts short but informative. What I should have done better is researched more radio news scripts as this would of helped me get the best news script to follow and therefore I wouldn’t of had to make so many changes to my first draft. From this assignment I have learnt that I should do a lot more research to improve my final draft.

Assingment 2.1 - Radio Advertisement - Planning

Planning a Radio Advert

Who is your target audience?

The target audience is ages 14-30 , this is such a large audience as Gateshead caters for all ages for higher education. Metro Radio broadcasts to the North East so therefore the demographic location would be Newcastle and surrounding areas.

How might you appeal to your target audience?

The language of the advert would be to appeal to teenagers in the North East , I would like to use a bubbly young geordie voice to present this advert , with a slow understanding pace so all the information could be consumed but the listeners.

Who is the company, and what is the product / service offered?

The company is Metro Radio and the product is a 30 second advert designed to promote the college to young people aged 14-19.

How does this product / service benefit , improve or fill a need in your target audience members' live?

The benefit is the students learn and get a qualification in the subject they are interested in . Gateshead College is a college with extreme variety and there's something for everyone .
